Japan Museum SieboldHuis is pleased to announce that the15th edition of the Annual Japan Market will be held on Sunday 8th of June from 12:00 – 17:00 hours. Come and see Japan in Leiden!

On June 8th, the Rapenburg will be packed with Japanese stalls featuring everything from manga to prints and from kimono to cosplay. Many aspects of both classical and modern Japanese culture will also be highlighted.

Entry to the market is free

Admission to the museum is not free. Standard admission prices are applicable. The Budo demontrations in the Tempelzaal of the Museum for Antiquities however are free.

Programme Japan Market 2025

Opening

The opening ceremony will take place at 12:00 in the presence of His Excellency the Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Hiroshi Minami and Mayor of Leiden, Peter Heijkoop. Director of Japan Museum SieboldHuis, Kris Schiermeier will open the Japan market. A resounding Taiko drum performance will announce the commencement of the opening ceremony.

Japan Museum SieboldHuis

Be sure to visit Japan Museum SieboldHuis, organiser of the market. The museum hosts the temporary exhibition ‘Anaïs López - the Tortoise and the Monk’. The multimedia project recounts the true story of photographer and storyteller Anaïs López’ search for the golden turtle Kami, goddess of the Kamo river.

Children's activities
Free activity booklets for children up to 17 years are available at the box office. There is a scavenger hunt for the permanent collection and a scavenger hunt for the temporary exhibition for children between 6 and 9 years old. For youth up to 13 years old, a free puzzle rebus is available from the temporary exhibition. For youth over 13 years old, a handout can be picked up at the box office with fun fun facts about the temporary exhibition and Siebold. (Please note, these are all in Dutch).

In the basement of the museum, you can find colouring sheets and origami. There is also a life-size memory game, you can try on kimono and have your picture taken with Hello Kitty!

Japanese flute
Mr Suzuki will give several performances with a shinobue (Japanese flute) in the museum's garden. The performances will take place from 12:30 to 12:50 and from 14:00 to 14:20.

Calligraphy demonstrations
Several exchange students from Japan will provide a calligraphy (shodo) demonstration in the museum courtyard. They will also display various elements of classical Japanese culture, including origami (art of folding) and a soroban (abacus), which the students will explain to visitors. The students will be present between 13:00 and 16:00.

Preformance Anaïs López
In this intimate performance of about 30 minutes, Anaïs López tells the extraordinary story of ‘The Turtle and the Monk’ - her personal, seven-year search for the golden turtle Kami, the goddess of the Kamo River in Kyoto. Please note! Booking is required (will be available soon). There is an additional cost for this activity.

Budo demonstrations

Several regional budo associations will demonstrate various Japanese martial arts. The demonstrations will take place in the Temple Hall of the National Museum of Antiquities. Admission for the demonstrations is free. However, visiting the exhibitions in the museum, regular admission prices will be charged.

Budo demonstrations in 2024

In 2000, the then Emperor and Empress of Japan visited Japan Museum SieboldHuis as part of the State Visit to the Netherlands. To commemorate this visit and their walk down the Rapenburg together with then Queen Beatrix, this event is organised annually by Japan Museum SieboldHuis.
