During his stay as physician on Deshima in the bay of Nagasaki, Philipp Franz von Siebold collected a vast amount of plants and seeds.
Over 700 viable plants and 400 seeds were brought to the Netherlands. A number of the original plants that Siebold sent to the Netherlands, still grow in the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. There is also a Siebold Memorial Garden and a Japanese garden.
Siebold gave various plants to Dutch cultivators. In a very short time Asian plants were found throughout Europe, Siebold has his own nursery in Leiden, where present day Sieboldstraat and Decimastraat are located.
There is more to discover over the plants and animals that Siebold brought to the Netherlands in the Flora and Fauna Room. There you can see how Siebold transported plants overseas.
