On Sunday 20 May Japan Museum SieboldHuis will host the Eleventh Annual Edition of the Japan Market.

The Japan Market is traditionally held to commemorate the visit of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan to Leiden in in 2000 during the State Visit that same year.

At 12.00 Kris Schiermeier, Director of the Japan Museum SieboldHuis and Ambassador of Japan Hiroshi Inomata will open the Japan Markt.

The market will extend from Japan Museum SieboldHuis on the Rapenburg to the Hortus Botanicus covering over 700 meters on Leiden’s most prominent street. A wide variety of goods will be displayed on stands along the designated route ranging from art and clothing, to gadgets and books. At the Foodcourt located on the Groenhazegracht you will find a wide variety of Japanese culinary products. Stroll through the market and admire the colourful kimonos, the bonsai trees and Japan’s famous woodblock prints. Discover more about modern day Japanese culture, taste the celebrated sushi and sake or surprise yourself with new dishes and flavours like Takoyaki.

But that’s not all! Throughout the day other activities will include a special Cosplay Photo Booth, a guided tour through the Siebold collection of the museum and an exciting tour for children (and their parents) about samurai on the first and second floor of the museum where ‘Masked Warriors. Battle stage of the samurai’ is on display. Across the waters of the Rapenburg in the Tempelzaal of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden demonstrations of Japanese martial arts will be held.
