Japanese Sword Seminar with Nobuo Nakahara and Takuyoshi Nakano

Essential appreciation of Japanese Sword

The Japanese Sword Seminar with Nobuo Nakahara - one of the top Kanteika (connoisseurs) of Japanese sword and his senior-disciple Takuyoshi Nakano, will be held, at the viewing room of Christie’s Amsterdam, on the 12th (Sat.) and 13th (Sun.) of October, 2019.

Japan has a long history of swords being cared and preserved with special respect, not only as weapons but also as objects for religious and ceremonial purposes. The Japanese people have made an enormous effort to protect the swords as cultural treasures and subjects of appreciation, far away from their practicality. Traditionally, most of the secret knowledge was passed down from generation to generation by oral instruction; which is called 口伝 (kuden).

Nobuo Nakahara, the author of the book “Facts and Fundamentals of Japanese Sword” has been lecturing as an independent sword researcher all over Japan for 40 years. His teacher, the sword expert Kosuke Murakami was a senior-disciple of famous traditional Kanteika and sword polisher Honami Koson, one of the most important connoisseurs of Japanese swords in history. Since 16th century, the Honami family sword polishers had been working for generations of Shoguns. From Edo Period (17th-19th) the family workshop became the official sword polishers and examinators of Tokugawa Shogunate.

This Seminar will be the first time for Nobuo Nakahara and Takuyoushi Nakano to teach outside of Japan. The lectures will be translated into English. It will be a great opportunity to learn the essence of the Japanese sword collecting and appreciation directly from the masters.
